Everyone has a story of a beloved grandmother.
In South Africa, like many countries around the world, these older women are pillars in their community. They open their hearts and their homes to extended family, provide care for grandchildren, and share a wisdom that only comes with years of experience. Yet with older age many suffer declining physical and mental health. All too often these grandmothers live with financial challenges and are the targets of crime, especially gender-based violence.
Older women engage in football!
In 2007 the organizer, Beka Ntsanwisi—a renowned community activist and cancer survivor—founded a soccer team of 40- to 80-year-old grandmothers to improve their health. At first the locals ridiculed them and told them they belonged at home caring for their grandchildren. But a team doctor recorded indisputable results from the regular exercise: improved mobility and lowered blood pressure and cholesterol. The team provided a new circle of friends to help with life’s challenges. Plus, they were having a blast!
Fourteen years later . . . that first team of grandmothers has inspired over 240 teams of older women across South Africa and other African countries. That is thousands of empowered women taking charge of their physical and emotional well-being. Imagine the renewed energy these women contribute to the community and those longer, healthier lives create even more joyful memories. It is time to celebrate!
The 2023 Grannies International Football Tournament
The Beka Ntsanwisi Foundation hosted the inaugural Grannies International Football Tournament (GIFT) in March 2023 in Limpopo. Sixteen teams participated from across Africa, the U.S., and Europe. The event opened with a parade of teams marching behind their nation’s flag with fans lining the streets as the teams paraded into a packed stadium. The crowds rose to their feet singing and dancing at each goal. International media outlets covered the event. The competitive spirit built until the winning team raised a trophy overhead. The women reveled in the warm celebration of what women over the age of 50 can accomplish.
More fun in 2025 . . .
Building on the success from 2023, GIFT will be held every two years and is envisaged to be the most prestigious soccer tournament for older women in the world. The goals are to promote a healthy lifestyle, foster social cohesion, and boost the local economy in the hosting province. The 2025 tournament will take place from April 2nd to 5th in Limpopo and will feature 32 teams from across the globe. We expect the event will become increasingly competitive while maintaining the strong positive spirit.
