Our founder

Rebecca "Mama Beka Ntsanwisi

Rebecca Ntsanwisi, affectionately known as 'Mother Teresa' by the locals, founded the Mamabekant Sanwisi Foundation. Diagnosed with colon cancer in 2003, Rebecca turned her health challenges into an opportunity to create a lasting impact on her community. Her unwavering dedication and compassionate spirit have laid the foundation for our ongoing efforts to support and uplift elderly women in Limpopo.

The Birth Of Vakhegula-Vakhegula FC

Vakhegula-Vakhegula Football Club is the brainchild of Beka Ntsanwisi, inspired by her personal battle with colon cancer. Established in 2007 in Nkowa-Nkowa township in the Limpopo Province, the club began as a way for Beka to regain her strength and fitness. Initially confined to a wheelchair, Beka started exercising with a ball as part of her recovery. Seeing the positive impact, she invited other elderly women in her community to join her, many of whom were also struggling with various health issues. This initiative blossomed into the first grannies soccer team.

The club has grown significantly since its inception, spreading across South Africa and beyond. Vakhegula-Vakhegula FC is now an internationally recognized brand, with teams participating in matches and tours in countries such as the USA, France, Brazil, Russia, and several African nations. The club provides elderly women with a platform for physical exercise, mental well-being, and social interaction, addressing challenges like gender-based violence and poverty. The community built around the club offers support, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging.

In 2023, Beka Ntsanwisi made history by hosting the first-ever Grannies International Football Tournament, or Grannies World Cup, on African soil. The event featured 16 teams from six countries and highlighted the growing global influence of the Vakhegula-Vakhegula movement. Preparations are underway for the 2025 Grannies International Football Tournament, promising even greater participation and further boosting sports tourism in the region.
